The Primary Sector Special Interest Group was formed to provide a primary perspective in TESOLANZ. Some issues noted by ESOL teachers working in Primary schools around New Zealand are:
If you are a TESOLANZ member with an interest in these or other issues affecting ESOL teaching in a NZ Primary school, contact the Primary SIG Coordinator, Gwenna Finikin, to be added to the Primary SIG emailing list.
TESOLANZ believes that specialist teachers with a recognised ESOL qualification should
have responsibility for developing, planning and implementing ESOL programmes.
Programmes can be enhanced by paraprofessionals who would ideally hold qualifications in
working with ELLs. We encourage all schools to support teachers and paraprofessionals to
gain ESOL qualifications.
Qualified staff have the benefit of training to support the micro-decisions of teaching required
to accelerate the development of English language proficiency, enabling our learners to more
readily access a broad classroom curriculum, achieving academic success and a sense of
social and emotional wellbeing.
It was good to catch up with so many people at CLESOL. I hope to meet even more at CLESOL 2018 in Christchurch.

The SIG meeting was held during the Dunedin symposium on October 17.
We welcomed new members Jenny Albrecht and Margie Askin, on to our steering group.
Please see the 2015 SIG report for information on what we have done this year.

At the end of 2013 and beginning of 2014 we undertook a small piece of research around the parents of ELL students and how they feel about their children being reported on against National Standards. The correlation we found was that those teachers who had been able to talk to parents about the reports were the ones who noted the parents either didn't mind, or quite liked, their children being reported on against National Standards. This highlights the importance of the home-school relationship for the on-going support of our learners.
This year the primary special interest group is again carrying out a small piece of research. This time it is on what support is accessed/accessible for ELLs. Please take a couple of minutes to take part. The SIG would be really interested to hear about your experiences, stories and decision making around support for your ELLs.
